The Need

With water coming through the roof and walls crumbling on every side, Moonde needed a new school building.

The first block to be worked on at Moonde was an old classroom building which required attention in a number of areas to make it adequate and safe to use, and to improve it aesthetically.

The paint on the exterior walls was stained and peeling in many places, and the interior was not much better. Many of the window panes were broken, leaving dangerous shards of glass in some places, which were a serious hazard to pupils. The doors to the classrooms and office were coming off their hinges and the locks no longer worked. Inside the classrooms, the concrete floors were badly cracked and uneven.

At the time of construction, there was not enough money available to construct a veranda over the classroom and office doors, which is something all classroom buildings are supposed to have. This helps to keep out the rain in the wet season and provides shade for teachers and pupils at break times.
