Focal Schools Programme
With many schools having moved to displaced sites during the conflict, often sharing sites with other schools, it is not unusual to see 150 pupils in a primary school classroom. Every school in the region severely lacks basic resources and school buildings.
Moving away from our general 2008 ‘Infrastructure Programme’ into a more focused Programme, we aim to have a greater impact upon improving the standard of education and pupil achievement in selected schools through a 3-5 year programme of individually focused, needs-led, holistic and sustainable school development. This includes:
· Infrastructure and resource projects.
· Projects to enhance community-school relations.
· The development of small income generating activities that will enable schools to provide for themselves in the long term without our help.
Cubu Primary School
The school and community in Cubu were deeply affected and traumatised by the conflict . During this period, survival and the struggle against poverty overshadowed the importance of education. After drilling a borehole in the school grounds in May 2008, African Revival identified Cubu Primary as a school in need of development and with great potential. We are currently constructing a library, guidance and counselling room as well as a small shop in order to serve the community. This will provide the school and the community with the platform to tackle its problems concerning education and poverty with the help of African Revival as part of a three year development plan.
All activities and projects are carried out in close collaboration with the local government and other bodies to ensure the co-ordination of inputs into the school and added value of the project.
Koch Goma Secondary
Koch Goma Secondary was displaced during the conflict into a site based in town. With a relative state of peace having arrived in the region, the teachers and pupils at Koch Goma are now ready to move back to their original site, 25km outside of GuluTown. With cooperation from other NGOs in the area, the project will be an impressive one. African Revival has funded the construction and equipment of a girls dormitory and will be constructing a library, administration block, girls’ washroom as well as providing solar power for an ICT block. We have also put in place a staff incentive scheme in order to motivate teachers and improve teaching standards.
Bwobo Manam Primary
The 20 year conflict forced Bwobo Manam Primary school to a displaced site in 1996 and since then they have moved 4 times, leaving the school, its pupils and teachers feeling somewhat unsettled. African Revival enabled Bwobo Manam to return to their original site in February 2009 having completed a three classroom block with office and store as well as renovating an additional four classroom block. Now that construction is complete, we are working with Bwobo Manam to establish a long term development strategy.
Other African Revival construction projects include:
· African Revival’s first construction project involved the construction of four classrooms at Bwobo Tochi Primary School .
· Palukere Primary School – African Revival renovated one block of classrooms with an office and store in 2008.
